BACKGROUND: Little is known about the incidence of delirium and its subtypes in patients admitted to different departments of university hospitals in Latin America. OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of delirium and the frequency of its subtypes, as well as its associated factors, in patients admitted to different departments of a university hospital in Bogotá, Colombia. METHODS: A cohort of patients over 18 years of age admitted to the internal medicine (IM), geriatrics (GU), general surgery (GSU), orthopaedics (OU) and intensive care unit (ICU) services of a university hospital was followed up between January and June 2018. To detect the presence of delirium, we used the CAM (Confusion Assessment Method) and the CAM-ICU if the patient had decreased communication skills. The delirium subtype was characterised using the RASS (Richmond Agitation and Sedation Scale). Patients were assessed on their admission date and then every two days until discharged from the hospital. Those in whom delirium was identified were referred for specialised intra-institutional interdisciplinary management. RESULTS: A total of 531 patients admitted during the period were assessed. The overall incidence of delirium was 12% (95% CI, 0.3-14.8). They represented 31.8% of patients in the GU, 15.6% in the ICU, 8.7% in IM, 5.1% in the OU, and 3.9% in the GSU. The most frequent clinical display was the mixed subtype, at 60.9%, followed by the normoactive subtype (34.4%) and the hypoactive subtype (4.7%). The factors most associated with delirium were age (adjusted RR = 1.07; 95% CI, 1.05-1.09), the presence of four or more comorbidities (adjusted RR = 2.04; 95% CI, 1.31-3.20), and being a patient in the ICU (adjusted RR = 2.02; 95% CI, 1.22-3.35). CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of delirium is heterogeneous in the different departments of the university hospital. The highest incidence occurred in patients that were admitted to the GU. The mixed subtype was the most frequent one, and the main associated factors were age, the presence of four or more comorbidities, and being an ICU patient.

Background: The study aimed to compare the amount of extrusion, the time taken to achieve apical patency and duration for removing filling material during the retreatment of teeth filled with NeoMTA 2® (Avalon Biomed, Houston, TX, USA), a calcium silicate hydraulic cement and AHPlus™ (Denstsply, Konstanz, Germany), a resin-based cement, using continuous rotation and asymmetric reciprocating rotation instruments. Material and Methods: 60 monoradicular human teeth were selected and instrumented with Race #35.06 (FKG Dentaire, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland). The teeth were randomly assigned to two groups based on the cement used for filling (n = 30 each) AHPlus™ and NeoMTA 2®. Both groups were obturated with gutta-percha, using the lateral condensation technique. During non-surgical retreatments, each group was further divided into two subgroups: D-Race (FKG) and Reciproc (VDW, Munich, Germany) (n = 15 each). The total time to achieve apical patency and complete the retreatment were recorded. Extruded debris were collected and weighted. Student t-tests were employed for mean comparisons to assess significant differences between variables. Results: No statistically significant differences were found in terms of type of cement and apical extrusion. Regarding the rotation system, using the Reciproc system resulted in longer time to achieve patency and retreatment times compared to D-Race system, with statistically significant differences (P< 0.05). Conclusions: All systems used in retreatment led to apical extrusion. Apical patency was achieved in all cases. Key words:D-Race, Reciproc, calcium silicate-based cement, root canal retreatment.

BACKGROUND: During breastfeeding, the maternal diet ensures mothers and infants health. Therefore, it is necessary to update information about the diet of exclusively or partially breastfeeding women in each population. We evaluated the diet of Sonoran breastfeeding women, identified their dietary patterns, and examined their association with the breastfeeding regime. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 62 women breastfeeding exclusively (n = 43) or partially (n = 19) participated. The diet was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire, and patterns were identified through principal component analysis. RESULTS: Overall, fats and sodium intake were higher, while potassium intake was lower than recommended. Two dietary patterns were identified: "regional" (n = 36) and "prudent" (n = 26). Women following the "prudent" pattern consumed more protein, calcium, and potassium than those following the "regional" pattern (p < 0.05). The probability of exclusively breastfeeding women having a "prudent" dietary pattern was higher than that of partially breastfeeding women (adjusted odds ratios = 7.29, p = 0.019). CONCLUSIONS: Exclusive breastfeeding possibly motivated mothers to follow a more prudent diet than those who partially breastfed. Therefore, it is crucial to promote a healthy diet among breastfeeding mothers.


INTRODUCCIÓN: Durante el amamantamiento, la dieta garantiza la salud materno-infantil. Por esto, es necesario contar con información actualizada sobre la dieta de quienes amamantan exclusiva o parcialmente en cada población. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la dieta de mujeres sonorenses amamantando, identificar sus patrones dietarios y buscar su asociación con el régimen de lactancia. MÉTODOS: En este estudio transversal participaron 62 mujeres amamantando de forma exclusiva (n = 43) o parcialmente (n = 19). Se evaluó la dieta con un cuestionario de frecuencia de consumo de alimentos y los patrones se identificaron a través del análisis de componentes principales. RESULTADOS: En general, la ingestión de grasas y sodio fue superior y la de potasio inferior a las cantidades recomendadas. Se identificaron dos patrones dietarios: "regional" (n = 36) y "prudente" (n = 26). Las mujeres con patrón "prudente" ingirieron más proteína, calcio y potasio que las del patrón "regional" (p < 0.05). La probabilidad de que las mujeres que amamantaban en exclusiva siguieran un patrón dietario "prudente" fue mayor que la de aquellas que amamantaban parcialmente (razón de momios ajustada (AOR) = 7.29, p = 0.019). CONCLUSIONES: La lactancia exclusiva posiblemente motivó a las madres a seguir una dieta más prudente que la de aquellas que amamantaban parcialmente. Es necesario promover una dieta saludable entre las madres amamantando.

BACKGROUND: Mental well-being plays a pivotal role within the broader spectrum of health and illness, encompassing factors such as stress, depression, and anxiety. Nature-based therapeutic interventions have emerged as a promising approach to addressing these mental health challenges. This study seeks to assess the impact of these interventions on stress, depression, and anxiety levels. METHODS: We conducted an extensive search for randomized clinical trials that examined stress, anxiety, and depression levels. The selected studies underwent a rigorous risk-of-bias assessment following the guidelines outlined in the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews. RESULTS: Our review encompassed findings from eight publications. Among them, two studies measuring cortisol levels revealed significant differences between the pre-test and post-test measurements within the intervention groups. In two studies that employed the Stress Response Inventory, a significant decrease in stress levels was observed within the intervention groups in contrast to the control groups. However, no significant differences were noted in studies that utilized the Restorative Outcome Scale. In the assessment of anxiety and depression levels, three studies employed the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, while four studies utilized The Profile of Mood States scale; none of these studies demonstrated significant differences. CONCLUSIONS: The current body of evidence offers limited support for advocating nature-based therapeutic interventions as a primary approach to reducing stress, depression, and anxiety.

The interplay between the immune system and the metabolic state of a cell is intricate. In all phases of an immune response, the corresponding metabolic changes shall occur to support its modulation, in addition to the signalling through the cytokine environment and immune receptor stimulation. While autoimmune disorders may develop because of a metabolic imbalance that modulates switching between T-cell phenotypes, the effects that the interaction between T and B cells have on one another's cellular metabolism are yet to be understood in disease context. Here, we propose a perspective which highlights the potential of targeting metabolism to modulate T- and B-cell subtypes populations as well as T-B and B-T cell interactions to successfully treat autoimmune disorders. Specifically, we envision how metabolic changes can tip the balance of immune cells interactions, through definite mechanisms in both health and disease, to explain phenotype switches of B and T cells. Within this scenario, we highlight targeting metabolism that link inflammation, immunometabolism, epigenetics and ageing, is critical to understand inflammatory disorders. The combination of treatments targeting immune cells that cause (T/B) cell phenotype imbalances, and the metabolic pathways involved, may increase the effectiveness of treatment of autoimmune disorders, and/or ameliorate their symptoms to improve patients' quality of life.

Objective: Although 82% of American adults have a body mass index (BMI) of over 25, individuals with elevated BMI are considered difficult to recruit for studies. Effective participant identification and recruitment are crucial to minimize the likelihood of sampling bias. One understudied factor that could lead to sampling bias is the study information presented in recruitment materials. In the context of weight research, potential participants with higher weight may avoid studies that advertise weight-related procedures. Thus, this study experimentally manipulated the phrasing of weight-related information included in recruitment materials and examined its impact on participants' characteristics. Methods: Two visually similar flyers, either weight-salient or neutral, were randomly posted throughout a university campus to recruit participants (N = 300) for a short survey, assessing their internalized weight bias, anticipated and experienced stigmatizing experiences, eating habits, and general demographic characteristics. Results: Although the weight-salient (vs. neutral) flyer took 18.5 days longer to recruit the target sample size, there were no between flyer differences in respondents' internalized weight bias, anticipated/experienced weight stigma, disordered eating behaviors, BMI, or perceived weight. Absolute levels of these variables, however, were low overall. Conclusion: Providing detailed information about study procedures allows participants to have more autonomy over their participation without differentially affecting participant characteristics.

The effects of the dietary inclusion of a mixture of bacterial direct-fed microbial (DFM) on feedlot beef cattle growth performance, carcass characteristics, nutrient digestibility, feeding behavior, and ruminal papillae morphology were evaluated. Crossbred-Angus steers (n = 192; initial body weight (BW) = 409 kg ±â€…8 kg) were blocked by BW and randomly assigned into 48 pens (4 steers/pen and 16 pens/treatment) following a randomized complete block design. A steam-flaked corn-based fishing diet was offered to ad libitum intake once daily for 153 d containing the following treatments: (1) Control (no DFM, lactose carrier only); (2) treat-A (Lactobacillus animalis, Propionibacterium freudenreichii, Bacillus subtilis, and Bacillus licheniformis), at 1:1:1:3 ratio, respectively; totaling 6 × 109 CFU (50 mg)/animal-daily minimum; and (3) treat-B, the same DFM combination, but with doses at 1:1:3:1 ratio. Bacterial counts were ~30% greater than the minimum expected. Data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS, with pen as the experimental unit, the fixed effect of treatment, and the random effect of BW-block, while preplanned contrasts comparing Control × treat-A or treat-B were used. Steers offered treat-A had increased carcass-adjusted average daily gain (P = 0.03) by 6.7%, gain efficiency (P < 0.01) by 6%, tended (P = 0.07) to have increased carcass-adjusted final BW by 15 kg, and hot carcass weight (P = 0.07) by 10 kg, while treat-B did not differ (P ≥ 0.17) from control. Overall dry matter (DM) intake (P = 0.36) and other carcass traits (P ≥ 0.13) were not affected by treatments. Steers offered treat-A tended to have increased digestibility of DM (P = 0.07) by 3%, neutral detergent fiber (P = 0.10), and hemicellulose (P = 0.08) by 9% compared with control, while treat-B did not differ (P ≥ 0.10) from control. No treatment × period interactions (P ≥ 0.21) or main effects of treatment (P ≥ 0.12) were observed during 24-h feeding behavior. Steers ruminated, ate, chewed, and were more active (P ≤ 0.01) during the second behavioral assessment (day 113), while drinking behavior was not affected (P ≥ 0.88). Ruminal papillae morphology and ruminal ammonia concentration (ruminal fluid collected at slaughter facility) were not affected by treatment (P ≥ 0.39). Steers offered the DFM treat-A had improved growth performance and it positively affected carcass weight and nutrient digestion. The DFM combinations did not seem to affect feedlot cattle feeding behavior or ruminal papillae morphology.


Direct-fed microbials (DFM) are naturally occurring microorganisms that alter cattle ruminal fermentation and intestinal function and have been shown to improve growth performance and nutrient digestibility of cattle. The use of DFM in animal feed has continuously increased in feedlots as an alternative to traditional antibiotic additives, which have gained negative public perception and additional regulatory scrutiny. High-energy diets can induce physiological challenges to cattle, especially when based on high starch availability ingredients, which may negatively affect animal growth performance. Such physiological digestive challenges may be overcome by a target combination of DFM bacterial strains (Lactobacillus animalis, Propionibacterium freudenreichii, Bacillus subtilis, and Bacillus licheniformis). These microorganisms individually have shown to have positive effects on finishing cattle offered high-energy diets, which highlights the need for research to optimize DFM types and doses to enhance the use of bacterial strains that can positively affect cattle growth performance, carcass traits, nutrient digestibility, and other variables relevant to the physiology of digestion. In the current experiment, feedlot steers offered a specific bacterial DFM combination/dose had improved average daily gain and feed efficiency, which were reflected as a positive influence on hot carcass weight and digestibility of nutrients, while not effectcting feeding behavior and ruminal morphology.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder of the gut-brain interaction that is associated with abdominal pain, altered bowel patterns, and reduced quality of life. Up to 50% of patients with IBS also report anxiety or depressive symptoms. Although effective self-management interventions exist for individuals with IBS, few have been effectively implemented, and most do not consider the unique needs of patients with comorbid IBS and anxiety or depression. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the anticipated acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, and usability of a comprehensive self-management intervention using an implementation science and human-centered design approach among individuals with comorbid IBS and anxiety or depression and health care providers. METHODS: A convergent mixed methods design was used to elicit feedback on the comprehensive self-management intervention outline and content to identify refinement needs before testing. Patients with IBS and moderate to severe anxiety or depression and health care providers were purposefully sampled from primary care and gastroenterology settings. Participants completed semistructured interviews and surveys on anticipated acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, and usability. RESULTS: Patient participants (n=12) were on average 36.8 (SD 12.2) years of age, and 42% (5/12) were currently receiving psychological therapy. Health care providers (n=14) were from primary care (n=7) and gastroenterology (n=7) settings. The mean usability scores (out of 100) were 52.5 (SD 14.5) for patients and 45.6 (SD 11.6) for providers. For patients and providers, qualitative data expanded the quantitative findings for acceptability and appropriateness. Acceptability findings were the comprehensive nature of the intervention and discussion of the gut-brain interaction. For appropriateness, participants reported that the intervention provided structure, accountability, and support. Feasibility was confirmed for patients, but there was a divergence of findings between quantitative and qualitative measures for providers. Patients focused on intervention feasibility, while providers focused on implementation feasibility in the clinic. Identified usability issues to address before implementation included the intervention delivery format, length, and lack of integration into health care settings that, if not addressed, may limit the reach of the intervention. CONCLUSIONS: Patients and health care providers found the intervention acceptable and appropriate. Several feasibility and usability issues were identified, including intervention delivery methods, length of intervention, and the best methods to implement in the clinic setting. The next steps are to refine the intervention to address the identified issues and test in a pilot study whether addressing usability issues leads to the anticipated improvements in implementation and uptake.

Effects of bacterial direct-fed microbial (DFM) mixtures on intake, nutrient digestibility, feeding behavior, ruminal fermentation profile, and ruminal degradation kinetics of beef steers were evaluated. Crossbred Angus ruminally cannulated steers (n = 6; body weight [BW] = 520 ±â€…30 kg) were used in a duplicated 3 × 3 Latin square design and offered a steam-flaked corn-based finisher diet to ad libitum intake for 3, 28-d periods. Treatments were 1) Control (no DFM, lactose carrier only); 2) Treat-A (Lactobacillus animalis, Propionibacterium freudenreichii, Bacillus subtilis, and Bacillus licheniformis), at 1:1:1:3 ratio, respectively; totaling 6 × 109 CFU (50 mg)/animal-daily minimum; and 3) Treat-B, the same DFM combination, but doses at 1:1:3:1 ratio. Bacterial counts were ~30% greater than the minimum expected. Data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS with the model including the fixed effect of treatment and the random effects of square, period, and animal (square). For repeated measure variables, the fixed effects of treatment, time, and their interaction, and the random effects of square, period, animal (square), and animal (treatment) were used. Preplanned contrasts comparing Control × Treat-A or Treat-B were performed. Intake and major feeding behavior variables were not affected (P ≥ 0.17) by treatments. Steers offered Treat-A had an increased (P = 0.04) ADF digestibility compared with Control. Steers offered Treat-A experienced daily 300 min less (P = 0.04) time under ruminal pH 5.6, a greater (P = 0.04) ruminal pH average and NH3-N concentration (P = 0.05) and tended (P = 0.06) to have a lower ruminal temperature compared to Control. Ruminal VFA was not affected (P ≥ 0.38) by treatments. Steers offered Treat-A increased (P = 0.02) and tended (P = 0.08) to increase the ruminal effective degradable NDF and ADF fractions of the diet-substrate, respectively. When the forage-substrate (low quality) was incubated, steers offered Treat-A tended (P = 0.09) to increase the effective degradable hemicellulose fraction compared to Control. In this experiment, the bacterial combinations did not affect intake and feeding behavior, while the combination with a greater proportion of B. licheniformis (Treat-A) elicited an improved core-fiber digestibility and a healthier ruminal pH pattern, in which the ruminal environment showed to be more prone to induce the effective degradability of fiber fractions, while also releasing more NH3-N.


During the finishing phase, a high-energy diet offers benefits related to beef cattle growth and development. However, it is essential to acknowledge that finisher diets are energy-dense and can pose digestive challenges, such as subacute ruminal acidosis. Digestive disturbances negatively affect animal well-being, growth performance, and economic returns. To address digestive challenges endured by animals on high-energy diets, the current experiment focused on the addition of bacterial direct-fed microbial (DFM) mixtures. A unique combination of bacterial DFM containing Lactobacillus animalis, Propionibacterium freudenreichii, Bacillus subtilis, and Bacillus licheniformis was evaluated. These bacteria have been individually reported to improve cattle nutrient utilization, digestibility, ruminal function, and maintain ruminal pH. The study aimed to investigate the effects of this specific microbial combination and doses when added to beef cattle finisher diets. The DFM mixtures offered seemed to not affect intake and major feeding behavior variables. The DFM combination containing a greater proportion of B. licheniformis (Treat-A) seemed to elicit an improved total tract core-fiber digestibility, and a safer ruminal pH pattern. The ruminal environment was shown to be more prone to improve the ruminal effective degradability of fiber fractions, while also releasing more NH3­N.

Imagine a bowl of soup that never emptied, no matter how many spoonfuls you ate-when and how would you know to stop eating? Satiation can play a role in regulating eating behavior, but research suggests visual cues may be just as important. In a seminal study by Wansink et al. (2005), researchers used self-refilling bowls to assess how visual cues of portion size would influence intake. The study found that participants who unknowingly ate from self-refilling bowls ate more soup than did participants eating from normal (not self-refilling) bowls. Despite consuming 73% more soup, however, participants in the self-refilling condition did not believe they had consumed more soup, nor did they perceive themselves as more satiated than did participants eating from normal bowls. Given recent concerns regarding the validity of research from the Wansink lab, we conducted a preregistered direct replication study of Wansink et al. (2005) with a more highly powered sample (N = 464 vs. 54 in the original study). We found that most results replicated, albeit with half the effect size (d = 0.45 instead of 0.84), with participants in the self-refilling bowl condition eating significantly more soup than those in the control condition. Like the original study, participants in the self-refilling condition did not believe they had consumed any more soup than participants in the control condition. The H2 O@HKUST-1 and DMF@HKUST-1 systems were experimental and computationally assessed, employing XRD/TGA/FT-IR/DFT-calculations, evidencing that H2 O or DMF coordinated to Cu, modulating HKUST-1 photocatalytic properties. DMF@HKUST-1 has narrower bandgap promoting higher-crystallinity and light-harvesting. H2 O@HKUST-1 showed smaller particle sizing and sharp morphology. Theoretical models, (H2 O)1 @HKUST-1 and (DMF)1 @HKUST-1, containing one coordinated molecule, elucidated bandgap modulation associated with infiltration. H2 O@HKUST-1/DMF@HKUST-1 presented bandgaps [eV] of 3.6/3.4, by Tauc plots, and 3.55/3.26, by theoretical calculations, narrowing bandgap, compared with non-solvated HKUST-1(HKUST-1NS ). Both composites raised the valence band (VB) and lowered the conduction band (CB), but DMF@HKUST-1 most raised VB. Topological analysis revealed that guests i) with higher electronic density, raised VB, and ii) induced π-backbonding, lowering CB. DMF@HKUST-1 presented a higher photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (µmol), 26.45, in the first 30 min of the reaction, nevertheless, H2 O@HKUST-1 presented a competitive activity, of 17.32. In large periods, H2 O@HKUST-1/DMF@HKUST-1 showed practically the same hydrogen evolution, 45.50/49.03.

CaVγ2 (Stargazin or TARPγ2) is a protein expressed in various types of neurons whose function was initially associated with a decrease in the functional expression of voltage-gated presynaptic Ca2+ channels (CaV) and which is now known to promote the trafficking of the postsynaptic α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionic acid receptors (AMPAR) towards the cell membrane. Alterations in CaVγ2 expression has been associated with several neurological disorders, such as absence epilepsy. However, its regulation at the transcriptional level has not been intensively addressed. It has been reported that the promoter of the Cacng2 gene, encoding the rat CaVγ2, is bidirectional and regulates the transcription of a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) in the antisense direction. Here, we investigate the proximal promoter region of the human CACNG2 gene in the antisense direction and show that this region includes two functional cAMP response elements that regulate the expression of a lncRNA called CACNG2-DT. The activity of these sites is significantly enhanced by forskolin, an adenylate cyclase activator, and inhibited by H89, a protein kinase A (PKA) antagonist. Therefore, this regulatory mechanism implies the activation of G protein-coupled receptors and downstream phosphorylation. Interestingly, we also found that the expression of CACNG2-DT may increase the levels of the CaVγ2 subunit. Together, these data provide novel information on the organization of the human CACNG2-DT gene promoter, describe modulatory domains and mechanisms that can mediate various regulatory inputs, and provide initial information on the molecular mechanisms that regulate the functional expression of the CaVγ2 protein.

The effect of 20% high degree polymerized agave fructans (HDPAF) on the induction of the defense system in avocado fruits was investigated by transcriptomic analysis at 1, 24 and 72 h after treatment, and the effect of HDPAF on respiration rate and ethylene production was also analyzed. Transcriptomic profiling revealed 5425 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), 55 of which were involved in the pathways related to plant defense response to pathogens. Key genes were associated with phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, mitogen-activated protein signaling, plant hormone signaling, calcium ion signal decoding, and pathogenesis-related proteins. Dysregulated genes involved in ethylene biosynthesis were also identified, and the reduction in ethylene production by HDPAF was corroborated by gas chromatography, where three days of delayed peak production was observed compared to that in water-treated fruits. These results help to understand the mechanism of induction of the avocado defense system by applying HDPAF and support the application of HDPAF as an efficient postharvest treatment to extend the shelf life of the fruit.

Within the hippocampus, the CA1 and dentate gyrus (DG) regions are considered the most and the least susceptible to damage by cerebral ischemia, respectively. In addition, it has been tested that rHuEPO exhibits neuroprotective properties. This work investigates the effect of different intranasal doses of rHuEPO, applied in different ischemic post-damage times in the DG, and the effect of the rHuEPO on astroglial reactivity after cerebral ischemia. Additionally, an effective dose for neuroprotection and an administration time was used to evaluate gene and protein expression changes of EPO and EPOR in the DG region. We observed a considerable loss of cells on the granular layer and an increased number of GFAP immunoreactive cells in this region only 72 h after the onset of ischemia/damage. When rHuEPO was administered, the number of morphologically abnormal cells and immunoreactivity decreased. In the analysis of protein and gene expression, there is no correlation between expression level of these molecules, although the rHuEPO amplifies the response to ischemia of EPO and EPOR gene for each evaluated time; in the case of the protein only at 2 h this effect was observed. We demonstrated the susceptibility of the DG to ischemia; so granular cells damage was observed, moreover of the astrocytic response, which is accompanied by molecular changes in signaling mediated by rHuEPO intranasal administration.

Reducing the economic and environmental impact of industrial process may be achieved by the smartisation of different components. In this work, tube smartisation is presented via direct fabrication of a copper (Cu)-based resistive temperature detector (RTD) on their outer surfaces. The testing was carried out between room temperature and 250 °C. For this purpose, copper depositions were studied using mid-frequency (MF) and high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS). Stainless steel tubes with an outside inert ceramic coating were used after giving them a shot blasting treatment. The Cu deposition was performed at around 425 °C to improve adhesion as well as the electrical properties of the sensor. To generate the pattern of the Cu RTD, a photolithography process was carried out. The RTD was then protected from external degradation by a silicon oxide film deposited over it by means of two different techniques: sol-gel dipping technique and reactive magnetron sputtering. For the electrical characterisation of the sensor, an ad hoc test bench was used, based on the internal heating and the external temperature measurement with a thermographic camera. The results confirm the linearity (R2 > 0.999) and repeatability in the electrical properties of the copper RTD (confidence interval < 0.0005).

Effects of a nutritional packet strategically offered to calf-fed system steers on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, feeding behavior, ruminal variables, and carcass characteristics were evaluated. Angus crossbred steer-calves (N = 60; body weight [BW] = 234 ±â€…4 kg) were used in a randomized complete block design (block = BW) and stratified into two treatments: 1) control; and 2) 30 g/steer-daily (dry matter [DM] basis) of a nutritional packet containing (steer-daily basis): Live yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae; 1.7 × 1010 CFU), vitamin C (Ascorbic acid, 162 mg), vitamin B1 (thiamin hydrochloride, 400 mg), sodium chloride (2.4 g), and potassium chloride (2.4 g). Animals were offered (electronic feed-bunks [SmartFeed, C-Lock Inc., Rapid City, SD]), a steam-flaked corn-based finishing diet to ad libitum (individual intake), once daily for 233 d. Treatments were offered during the first and last 60 days on feed (DOF). The GLIMMIX procedure of SAS was used, with steer as the experimental unit, treatment and phase (for feeding behavior and digestibility) as fixed effects, and BW-block as a random effect. Steers offered the nutritional packet had 14% less (P < 0.01) intake and 18% greater (P = 0.01) feed efficiency during the initial 30 DOF. Intake (days 0 to 233) was 6% greater (P = 0.02) for steers offered the nutritional packet, while BW gain was not different (P ≥ 0.44). Greater (P = 0.02) dressing percent (61.1% vs. 62%) for steers offered the packet was observed, while other carcass variables were not different (P ≥ 0.33). Digestibility of DM, organic matter, and fiber were greater (P < 0.01) for steers offered the packet. Steers offered the packet spent 13% less time eating during the first 60 DOF, while during the last 60 DOF a 14% greater meal frequency and 12.3% smaller mean meal size (treatment × phase interaction, P < 0.02) were observed. Steers offered the packet had a reduced (P ≤ 0.01) mean meal duration during both phases. Regardless of treatment, a decreased rumination (P ≤ 0.03) and chewing (P ≤ 0.01) activities were observed for the last 60 DOF compared to the first 60 DOF. Ruminal papillae area was 30% greater (P = 0.02) and the total volatile fatty acid (VFA) tended (P = 0.09) to be greater for steers offered the nutritional packet. The nutritional packet offered to calf-fed steers improved feed efficiency during the initial 30 d after arrival, while inducing superior overall intake, nutrient digestibility, dressing percentage, ruminal papillae area, and total ruminal VFA.

Previous studies have shown that in addition to its role within the voltage-gated calcium channel complex in the plasma membrane, the neuronal CaVß subunit can translocate to the cell nucleus. However, little is known regarding the role this protein could play in the nucleus, nor the molecular mechanism used by CaVß to enter this cell compartment. This report shows evidence that CaVß3 has nuclear localization signals (NLS) that are not functional, suggesting that the protein does not use a classical nuclear import pathway. Instead, its entry into the nucleus could be associated with another protein that would function as a carrier, using a mechanism known as a piggyback. Mass spectrometry assays and bioinformatic analysis allowed the identification of proteins that could be participating in the entry of CaVß3 into the nucleus. Likewise, through proximity ligation assays (PLA), it was found that members of the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs) and B56δ, a regulatory subunit of the protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A), could function as proteins that regulate this piggyback mechanism. On the other hand, bioinformatics and site-directed mutagenesis assays allowed the identification of a functional nuclear export signal (NES) that controls the exit of CaVß3 from the nucleus, which would allow the completion of the nuclear transport cycle of the protein. These results reveal a novel mechanism for the nuclear transport cycle of the neuronal CaVß3 subunit.

Introduction: The rapid advances in technology, market pressures, globalization, and, recently, the COVID-19 pandemic show the need to find educational models that respond to these realities while improving the employability levels of young people and promoting economic growth. This research analyzes how the professional formation model, where two learning spaces, the academy, and the company, are combined, promotes the closing of gaps and economic growth, through the development of intellectual capital that arises from this relationship, in an emerging economy such as Colombia. Methods: The methodology used corresponds to a qualitative approach, where the vision of the actors involved in the training process at the undergraduate level in Colombia is analyzed through semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and documentary analysis. Results and discussion: The results show five major elements to consider for the formation of the intellectual capital required for the success of the relationship and the reduction in the gaps between academia and business: decision-making mechanisms, inter-organizational coordination, knowledge.

As supply chains experienced disruptions early in the COVID-19 pandemic, personal protective equipment (PPE) quickly became scarce. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of perceptions of inadequate PPE, fear of COVID-19 infection, and self-reported direct COVID-19 exposure on health care workers. Data to assess distress, resilience, social-ecological factors, and work and nonwork-related stressors were collected from June to July 2020 at a large medical center. Stressors were analyzed by role using descriptive statistics and multivariate regression analysis. Our data indicate that job role influenced fear of infection and perceptions of inadequate PPE in the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Perceived organizational support was also related to perceptions of inadequate PPE supply. Interestingly, work location, rather than job role, was predictive of direct COVID-19 exposure. Our data highlight a disconnect between the perception of safety in the health care setting with real risk of exposure to infectious disease. This study suggests that leaders in health care should focus on cultivating supportive organizational cultures, assessing both perceived and actual safety, and provide adequate training in safety practices may improve preparedness and organizational trust during times of both certainty and crisis particularly for clinical workers with less education and training.

Macrophages play crucial roles in inflammation and oxidative stress associated with noncommunicable diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer. Glycomacropeptide (GMP) is a bioactive peptide derived from milk κ-casein that contains abundant sialic acid and has shown anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, anti-obesity, and anti-diabetic properties when is orally administered. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of GMP on the regulation of the inflammatory response in human macrophages and the participation of sialic acid in this activity. GMP pretreatment decreased by 35%, 35%, and 49% the production of nitrites, interleukin (IL)-1ß, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, respectively, in activated human macrophages U937. The same effect was obtained when cells were pretreated with asialo GMP, and no change on the gene expression of the lectins associated with the recognition of sialic acids, SIGLEC5, 7, and 9, was induced by GMP on macrophages, which suggests that sialic acid might not be involved in this immunoregulatory effect. Interestingly, GMP increased 8.9- and 3.5-fold the gene expression of the canonical anti-inflammatory protein SOCS3 and the antioxidant enzyme HMOX1, respectively, in U937 cells. Thus, GMP exerts anti-inflammatory and antioxidative activities on activated macrophages in a sialic acid-independent manner, which might be related to its in vivo reported bioactivity.
